PROJECTS

Medical Internship in India— Shadowing a plastic surgeon, general surgeon in the ICU, interviewing a retired owner of a hospital, and visiting the slums and lower class residential areas to witness first hand where they get their water from.

This project was assigned to me by my medical innovations teacher in my STEM biomedical academy, year 12 in High school. The objective of this project was to conduct independent research coinciding with an internship on a medical related issue that we are passionate about. I immediately thought about my visits to India in the past, and the great prominence of waterborne diseases littering the cities I have seen. My passion for this project is derived from my home country. Flying to India for a school project seemed immensely excessive. But I realized that the benefit, new found insight, and personal growth I would gain are all much larger than a grade on my transcript. This opportunity is a magnanimous one, and I am immensely grateful to be able to combine my two passions on this amazing trip, create new strong human connections, and amplify my compassion in the process of helping others. The first goal of this project was to better understand the workings of the medical field in my country of origin and desired future employment. The second goal is to assess one of the nation’s major problems first hand. The crisis of lack of clean water. India currently ranks 120/122 in the world for the cleanliness of their water supply. Currently 70% of their water is contaminated, spreading various chemical poisoning and bacterial disease to millions of people. My hope is to use this experience to personally better myself, grow, and fulfill my passions to my best ability, as well as learn about what I can do as a future medical professional in contributing to a solution for this large issue.
